A prediction and wish for journalism internships

My colleague, friend and fellow journalist/DEI trainer Doris Truong recently had an essay published by Nieman Lab.

It’s part of Nieman’s series about journalism predictions for 2022, and Doris wrote about the current state of journalism internships.

She starts: “Opportunities for young journalists aren’t created equal, and U.S. media internships are fraught with inequity.”

I was thrilled that she asked me to contribute to her essay, in which I write of the journalism internship system:

Why is the pipeline one-directional? Why aren’t the larger newsrooms with more resources also helping supply talent to the smaller ones?

Please take a moment to read Doris’ thoughtful and enlightening essay. Doris is the director of diversity and training at Poynter Institute. She also launched The Collective, a newsletter for and by journalists of color and their allies.

I hope in 2022, I will learn of more examples of how newsrooms are making the change for a more equitable and inclusive future.
